What's happening at Uttoxeter

Wed, Jun 24, 2015

Staff and management at Uttoxeter Racecourse in Staffordshire are today celebrating the news that they have received a Racecourse Association (RCA) 'Award for Excellence'.

The RCA and VisitEngland (VE) have just announced the top eleven racecourses in England and Wales for Visitor Attraction in 2014. Now in its sixth year, the awards scheme sees racecourses accredited by VisitEngland and allows racecourses to be benchmarked against other attractions assessed by the national tourism body.

For the very first time, however, the RCA and VE have also introduced 'Excellence Accolades'- individual awards, which represent very high standards in a particular area of the racecourse assessment. And amongst the inaugural prizewinners in this category is Uttoxeter Racecourse, which has claimed an RCA Excellence Accolade for "Visitor Information & Signage"

The 'Excellence Accolades' have been introduced this year to recognise high standards in specific areas of the racecourse.

In notifying Uttoxeter Racecourse of their success, a spokesman for the RCA noted that the assessor had commented that not only was visitor information and signage excellent throughout the racecourse, but that it also highlighted the helpful nature of the racecourse staff.

Uttoxeter Racecourse will now receive a plaque to acknowledge this achievement.

The Executive Director at the Uttoxeter Racecourse, David MacDonald, said: "To win any Racecourse Association Excellence Accolade is a huge honour and one that is granted to only a small number of racecourses. It is particularly pleasing that the award is a result of visits by VisitEngland inspectors who certainly know what Excellence looks like."

The announcement comes on the same day that the RCA and VE announced the top eleven racecourses in England and Wales for Visitor Attraction in 2014. The eleven that scored the highest marks in the VisitEngland assessments in 2014 are, in alphabetical order, Aintree, Carlisle, Cheltenham, Chester, Doncaster, Epsom, Goodwood, Haydock Park, Lingfield Park, Wincanton and York. (Each racecourse is assessed, with their overall score reflecting a number of criteria including the efficiency and friendliness of their customer service and the availability and cleanliness of facilities).

Coupled with the 2013 Deloitte price comparison study, which highlighted that racing is the best value family day out versus other attractions, a VE study confirms that a day at the races is both a hugely enjoyable and cost effective day out.

The RCA will continue to work with VE and VisitScotland to promote British racecourses, including through the former's #HomeofSport campaign, which encourages members of the public to submit their entries for their English 'Home of Sport'. The winning entry will be announced by VisitEngland on Friday 23 October.
