What's happening at Uttoxeter

Thu, Feb 16, 2017

bet365 have confirmed title sponsorship of the new Staffordshire Plate Raceday at Uttoxeter Racecourse, alongside The Sentinel newspaper which will sponsor the rest of the day's race card.

The Staffordshire Plate Raceday will be held on Saturday 6 May, just days after the county celebrates Staffordshire Day on 1 May.

The star event at Uttoxeter Racecourse on 6 May is a Handicap Chase for 5 year olds, run over 3 miles and 2 furlongs - which is exactly the same distance as the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The prize money is currently £25,000, and it is expected to attract a quality field. The same race attracted quality horses in the form of Katkeau, Al Co and 2014 Grand National winner Pineau De Re.

The race has been held at Uttoxeter Racecourse at this time of the year in the past, but the decision to name the feature event The Staffordshire Plate will help to not only set it apart from the norm, but also celebrate the long and rich history of horseracing in this quiet corner of Staffordshire.

Steve Ibberson, Managing Director of bet365, said, "The new bet365 Staffordshire Plate is a great celebration of all things Staffordshire and as a major employer within the area we were keen to be involved with this at our local track."

The rest of the card is taken by a longstanding partner, The Sentinel; and Uttoxeter Racecourse plans to run a reader offer in tandem with the newspaper to offer a free family ticket for the Centre Course to give residents in the area the opportunity to have a free day out at the races.

Executive Director at Uttoxeter Racecourse David MacDonald commented, "The racecourse is a key part of the Staffordshire and attracts many people from all over the area. With Staffordshire Day so close to this fixture it seemed fitting to join in the celebrations and really give something back to the local community. There will be plenty of entertainment for all the family, with quality racing for the grown-ups and plenty of children's entertainment over in our centre course family enclosure."

Tickets start at just £12, with savings offered for tickets purchased online. For further details, visit

Between then and now, however, Uttoxeter Racecourse will be also hosting one of the most colourful and spectacular sporting days out on the Midlands calendar - the 2017 Midlands Grand National. Scheduled to be run on Saturday 18 March it's the second largest steeplechase in the whole of the UK, after the Aintree Grand National, and will attract 16,000 racing fans and corporate guests to the famous Staffordshire racecourse.

Ticket prices for this year's Midlands Grand National range from £15 - £42. For further information and to book tickets online, visit, or call 01889 562561.
