IT’S 250 years since the modern circus was invented by one of Staffordshire’s greatest sons and Uttoxeter Racecourse is celebrating this momentous anniversary by bringing all the thrills of the Big Top to audiences this August Bank Holiday weekend.
Uttoxeter is playing host to the stars and entertainers of the nation’s most renowned circus, Chipperfield’s, from August 25-27, marking the landmark opening of the first circus by Newcastle-under-Lyme born Philip Astley in 1768.
Chipperfield’s 2018 award-winning non-animal production, from the 7th generation of the original Chipperfield Circus family, is full of fun, laughter and excitement.
From clowns, to roller skating, free-standing ladder, aerial skills, and lots more, it will be show to remember.
No-one will miss out. There will be FOUR 30 minute shows each day, at 12pm, 2pm, 4pm and 6pm, followed by a 30-minute circus skills workshop, with ticket prices to suit all-comers.

“Philip Astley was one of the great pioneers of mass entertainment and as a distinguished horseman I’m sure he would be delighted to see his memory marked with the greatest UK circus of modern times coming to a racing venue which also gives so much pleasure to so many.”
Philip Astley was born in Newcastle-under-Lyme in 1742. He opened his first circus in London in 1768 to the delight and astonishment of audiences.
